The 2010 St. David's Center for Child & Family Development Gala event seemed more like a dressed-up local sports party than a fund-raiser to support early childhood education.

Vikings coach Brad Childress, Gophers football coach Tim Brewster and the Star Tribune's Sid Hartman were among the guests at the Sofitel in Bloomington.

This year's event (the 22nd annual) emphasized "inclusive" classrooms, which provide kids of varying needs and abilities the opportunity to learn together. Executive director Julie Sjordal reiterated the mission "to build relationships that nurture the development of every child and family," she said.

Former Viking John Randle and his wife, Candace, served as honorary chairs. Their daughter, Ryann, is an alumnus and their 5-year-old son, Jonathan, is a student now.

Born with significant health problems, Jonathan experienced some developmental delays and currently receives occupational and speech therapies.

"He couldn't speak at all," said Candace Randle. Jonathan now talks, plays Nintendo DS, rides his bicycle and reads books. The gala was a chance for his parents to enjoy his accomplishments. "We're able to celebrate his success," she said.

John Randle, who will be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame later this year, agreed. "[St. David's has] given us something -- our son is like a normal kid now," he said.

That's the preschool equivalent of a touchdown.
