2 holes in one in 1 round for Bloomington golfer

Last update: July 31, 2009 - 3:38 PM

Doug Clemens said his tee shot this morning on the par-3 No. 4 had the look of a hole in one -- "it tracked right on it" -- but the ball rolled just past the cup.

"I was a little worried," Clemens said after wrapping up his 18 holes at the Dwan Golf Course in Bloomington. "I about ran out of money yesterday."

You see, Clemens had to run a tab Thursday at the course's bar because he knocked down a hole in one -- twice.

The 63-year-old golfer and part-time employee at the course aced holes 15 and 18 on his way to a round of 73.

Golf Digest puts the odds of that feat at about 67 million to 1.

He used a 3-wood to hit his first hole in one. Clemens said No. 15 was playing about 172 yards. "We never really saw it go in the hole," said Clemens, who was playing in a foursome.

Clemens, who carries an 11 handicap, then conquered the 135-yard 18th hole with a 6-iron. "That one we watched go in," he said.

That gives him four aces in his 45 years of golf and also means he owns bragging rights in the Bloomington home he shares with Sheryl, his golf-playing wife.

"My wife had three, and I had been trailing her for 17 years," he said, "then I caught and passed her in one day."
