Garden center goes to market

The folks at Tangletown Gardens have decided to share.

The Minneapolis boutique nursery, known for its unusual annuals and perennials, is now selling fresh produce daily. Owners Scott Endres and Dean Englemann have been growing produce at their Plato, Minn., greenhouse for years. But they've only sold the bounty to what Endres calls "the Tangletown family." Now we're all invited to join the clan.

Endres said they've made room in the tiny gas station-turned-garden center for a cooler for salad greens and herbs and shelves to hold seasonal favorites. Right now they're offering strawberries, four varieties of radishes, onions and heirloom potatoes.

"What we're trying to do is have the kitchen staples, but push the envelope by offering the varieties that really have the flavor," said Endres.

Endres said they'll offer "new stuff every day" through the gardening season and beyond. "We can grow salad greens and herbs well into the winter," he said.

Of course, they cheat: They have greenhouses.

Tangletown Gardens, 5353 Nicollet Av. S., is open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekends.
