If you blinked, you missed Kiana Mayes, one of the "Single Ladies" dancing on BET's "Access Granted: Above and Beyoncé."
"Her two seconds of fame," joked Joyce Mayes, owner of Minneapolis' All About Hair Salon and mother of the singer-dancer whose stage name is Kiana Marie. Joyce apparently did a mother lode of work, including videotaping the entry, viewable at startribune.com/video.
"We spent a few nights recording it. It was a lot of work. We had to move furniture," said Joyce, who still sounded exhausted. "I'll show you the whole video; you can see we left a mirror up so Kiana could use the whole mirror when she's dancing. My sister, Pat, said, You should have taken that painting down. After moving that furniture, I didn't even notice that painting [still] on the wall," Joyce said, laughing.
"Kiana was watching 'BET on Blast' Monday. I said, 'Wouldn't it be funny if they showed' and before I could get 'you' out of my mouth, there Kiana was on national TV. She's wearing a black leotard with blue, pink around the waist, about 31 seconds into the video. I was on the phone with Pat, talking about our sick aunt, while me and Kiana were watching the TV show. Me and Pat started screaming, 'Kiana, you're on BET! Kiana, you're on BET!'" Performing that song from Beyoncé's "I Am ... Sasha Fierce" album has become a media phenomenon. On BET, Beyoncé tells viewers, "People are really surprised to know that I've spent days and hours watching YouTube, watching all of the clips of everyone all over the world doing 'Single Ladies.'"
Joyce shot an e-mail to my friend Shaun LaBelle, the performer and producer who provides the music to "Cyber Jabber," who's been working on a CD with Kiana: "Here is your protege on BET."
It's unclear whether Kiana's two seconds of fame will re-air on BET, but the DVD "is being sold exclusively at Wal-Mart," according to Kiana's mom, who noted, "I went out and got me one. Beyoncé must have liked Kiana, since she was chosen for the DVD out of thousands of entries, even if it was only a couple seconds."
McDonough back here?Philly.com gossip Marnie Hall is reporting that a Twin Cities TV station may be ready to hire police reporter Beth McDonough.
That's good news for McDonough, whom Fox 9 parted ways with after she had her second drunken-driving arrest. The bad news is that I didn't hear about this from McDonough; I saw it at www.tinyurl.com/lp6y3e.
Funny or just mean?"I guess the only talent who can make the leap from E! to network prime-time is Samantha Harris and her Adam's apple," said snarkolicious Chelsea Handler on her cable show Monday, using a man's voice for the last two words.
What's that suppose to mean?
I looked at 10 Google.com photos of Harris, co-host of "Dancing With the Stars" and saw no Adam's apple, because women don't have them. I sent Harris an e-mail asking her to explain what's up. Maybe there's some feud, but have not heard back.
Another QB sightingBrowns QB "Brady Quinn had dinner Saturday night at Chino Latino," wrote an e-mailer identified as Leslie Parker. "He was at a table of what I assumed were football players, including John Sullivan, Vikings center and Quinn's former center at Notre Dame."
The Vikings did not return call on the Sullivan sighting, but a Chino Latino rep confirmed that Quinn was there.
A quiet anniversarySpin magazine editor Doug Brod said it doesn't look like Warner Bros. is doing anything to "really promote" the 25th anniversary of "Purple Rain."
"No one's really giving it its due [when] I think it's really a big deal," he said. So Spin's filling the void. "We have this tribute album 'Purplish Rain' that's up on Spin.com. We have nine different bands covering all nine songs. Maybe one or two of them are fairly straightforward, but most of the others are new arrangements, interpretations."
The performers donated their talent and "Spin took care of all the appropriate rights and will be paying out royalties for people to download the songs. Essentially, it hasn't really cost much at all, which is great."
Don't look for Symbolina around town on Saturday, which is the anniversary.
