Five questions for Bethenny Frankel

We caught up with Bethenny Frankel, one of "The Real Housewives of New York City," as she hosted a book signing and shopping party at Corset (www.corsetstyling.com) in Hopkins. She was looking forward to her first Mall of America visit, hoping to roller-skate around the mega structure.

She's touring the country for her book "Naturally Thin." Minnesotan Marcy Twete came to the event and has lost 50 pounds, in part by following Frankel's plan. (Frankel embraced her and mentioned that Twete might be a candidate for an Oprah appearance.) Her followup book, "Skinnygirl Dish: Easy Recipes for Your Naturally Thin Life," will be in stores around Jan. 1, and her signature cocktail mix, the Skinnygirl Margarita, will be launched in Supervalu stores soon.

While Frankel helped Corset shoppers that night, she doesn't shop much for herself anymore because she gets sent clothes and shoes from designers, including the hot pink Kay Unger dress she wore.

Here's what else she had to say:

Q Do you have any fashion tips?

A I tailor everything. And wear dresses. A simple dress is always good.

Q Do you have any summer wardrobe ideas?

A A tank top and jeans with hoop earrings, gray shoes and an ombre scarf, which they have [at Corset]. A splash of color is like food. You have plain romaine and a great dressing accessorizes it.

Q What about colors?

A White. It always looks fresh and summery.

Q What can we look forward to on next season's "Real Housewives of New York"?

A We start taping at the end of the summer. First of all, I'm in a relationship with a serious boyfriend. Otherwise, Luann [de Lesseps] is now divorced, Jill [Zarin]'s daughter is going to college, Ramona [Singer] is always crazy, and Alex and Simon are chasing after those two boys."

Q You left [Kelly Bensimon] out.

A You mean the calamity? She's a complete and utter idiot.

Sales and events

Ready for back-to-school shopping? Get ahead of the flock with the Pink Chicken trunk show at Bébé Babble (3904 Sunnyside Rd., Mpls., 952-922-2020) from 6 to 8 p.m. today.

Also tonight (6 to 9 p.m.), get a free crash course in screen-printing with the design duo of Calpurnia Peach at the Walker Art Center's Flat Pack (next to the Sculpture Garden). Bring your own T-shirt, pillowcase, skirt or whatever you want to print on (clean). Then you'll be able to use some summer-inspired screens and combine them into your own patterns and arrangement. The result: a one-of-a-kind piece.
