A senior at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire -- he's not only smart but is a triathlete and a salsa dancer -- was among 32 Americans named Rhodes Scholars, meaning a full ride to attend Oxford University in England.

The Rhodes Trust made the announcement early Sunday. There were 877 applicants endorsed by 305 colleges and universities.

The UW-Eau Claire recipient is Tayo A. Sanders II, who is from Neenah, Wis. Sanders expects to receive his bachelor of science degree in May, majoring in material science. Yes, his grade-point average is 4.0.

Away from the classroom, he has led tours for prospective UW-Eau Claire freshmen and has represented the school at high school education fairs. He's also co-captain of the campus Triathlon Club and belongs to a salsa dancing club, where he gives lessons.

He graduated from Kimberly High School, near Green Bay, where he was a wide receiver on the football team and a baseball center fielder.

The scholarships, averaging about $50,000 per year, cover all costs for two or three years of study at the prestigious university.

Rhodes scholarships were created in 1902 by the will of British philanthropist Cecil Rhodes. Winners are selected on the basis of high academic achievement, personal integrity, leadership potential and physical vigor, among other attributes.

The American students will join an international group of scholars selected from 14 other jurisdictions around the world. About 80 scholars are selected annually.
