Huge sample sale offers fall and winter clothing

There's no need to wait until January for clearance prices on new fall and winter clothing. The David Rosenberg sample sale for women (70 racks), men (16 racks, including lots of Quiksilver), juniors (15 racks) and plus sizes (two racks) includes moderately priced clothing, costume jewelry and purses, most priced lower than wholesale prices. Easily one of the largest sample sales for clothing in the Twin Cities, the best deals are on the $3 and $5 racks. The sale runs from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday at 11525 Excelsior Blvd., Minnetonka, 612-343-3221. While at the sale, head one door down to Mainstreet Consignment, one of the better furniture consignment stores in the Twin Cities.

One sale coming, one not

I've been getting lots of calls about the fall Thymes Ltd. warehouse sale. The scents and soaps sale will be held in late September or early October, but the date and location have not been set. Stay tuned. Another sale always worth waiting for, the Sleepyheads warehouse sale, is no more. Co-owner Francoise Shirley said the business was sold in April and the operations moved to Kentucky. Fans of the brands found at the sale can purchase them at www.sleepyheads.com or 1-800-803-4390. Clearance items on the site are eligible for free shipping through the end of the month with the discount code "clearanceship" on the checkout page.

Plan for school deals

An anonymous tipster offered an excellent back-to-school shopping tip: Wait another week or two when the remaining supplies go on clearance at Target, Wal-Mart and Office Max or Office Depot, and then scoop up supplies for the grade level your child will be in next year. For example, if your child is a third-grader this year, check the supply list online for fourth-graders at the school. Be sure to save receipts for supplies, textbooks, tutoring, academic summer camps, and computer and educational software, which are state tax-deductible for families earning less than $37,500, depending on family size. Use form M-1 on the Minnesota income tax return for the credit.
