Jacked, developed in Minneapolis, pits players against each other on a virtual racetrack.
The race is on for Jacked. And its Minneapolis creator, Holland Wood, hopes his new car-racing card game grabs the checkered flag.
In Jacked, players collect cards that bear racetrack segments and vehicles. Each player's vehicle cards are played alternately against the track cards, with matching traffic lights determining whether the cars advance. The first player to the end of the track wins the race.
Gamers also can agree to "play for pinks" (pink slips), in which the winning player gets the loser's vehicle, Wood said at a recent launch party at the Uptown office of Jacked. Like a kid with a new toy, the 36-year-old creator showed how the winner can then go to the Jacked website (www.jackedcardracing.com) and add the new car to a virtual garage using a unique registration number. The player also can see who has won and lost that car over its lifespan.
"It's kind of confusing at first, but it's easier once you get used to it," Alexander Stover, 9, said as he played Jacked with his friend, Tony Lahodny, 9.
"I like the challenge," Tony said as he surveyed the cards spread on the floor.
Jacked is available at Minnesota Target stores and will be sold elsewhere soon. A starter set, with two vehicle packs and one track pack, is $10. Individual packs -- 20 vehicles and six tracks -- are $4 each.
Wood said the game was born out of his love for playing car-racing video games and "flipping" for trading cards when he was young.
"I guess all those Atari years paid off," he said.
