The foods you eat and the activities you do can have a big impact on how long you live. If you were to follow the perfect recipe for a longer life, it would include lots of tofu and gardening.

"Tofu is probably the best longevity food ever invented," said Dan Buettner, author of the longevity book "The Blue Zone."

Tofu, which originated in China, is a flavorless, often-gelatinous food made from soybean curd. It's low in calories, rich in B vitamins and can be adapted for use in many prepared dishes.

"I know American eyeballs roll when you say 'tofu.' But tofu is very high in protein, very low in fat, full of minerals and has all of the amino acids necessary for human sustenance," he said. "It can also help keep your skin looking younger longer."

Gardening also has many benefits that make it an ideal activity for your well-being, said Dr. Greg Plotnikoff, director of the Institute for Health and Healing at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis. Gardening, for example:

• Reduces stress.

• Fosters a nurturing attitude.

• Is good physical exercise.

• Requires balance and flexibility.

• Takes place outdoors, where the sunshine brings plenty of beneficial vitamin D.

"And you can grow lots of vegetables to eat," Buettner added.
