With the return of spring comes baseball. This year, though, fans can go beyond Target Field -- to the public library.

To coincide with the Minnesota Twins' home opener on April 9, the Hennepin County Library will host an exhibit and panel discussion at the Minneapolis Central Library.

The exhibit, "Baseball: America's Game," will feature a collection of works following the sport's history from its modest mid-19th century beginnings to the widely followed Major League Baseball of today. Photos, video and other memorabilia from George Brace's photos of baseball heroes to Jim Dow's triptychs of major league stadiums, the display traces the history of baseball.

"It has so many elements to it and runs the gamut of imagery from rural to urban," said Diane Wagner of Bank of America, which organized the exhibit.

Video highlights from Ken Burns and Lynn Novick's 2010 documentary, "The 10th Inning," add another layer to the multimedia presentation.

Part of the Bank of America's Art in Our Communities program launched in 2009, the exhibit will also include contributions from the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, Major League Baseball Productions, the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, the Norman Rockwell Museum, and Florentine Films. The Minnesota Twins and the Friends of the Hennepin County Library provided additional support for the program and displays.

Accompanying the exhibit will be a panel discussion on April 10 with local authors and baseball historians Stew Thornley, Dan Levitt and Tom Swift. Award-winning author John Rosengren will moderate the discussion on what makes the sport so special. Both the exhibit and panel discussion are free and open to the public.
