Q Signs on parts of Interstate Hwy. 35W that are under construction give the speed limit as 45 miles per hour. Is that only when equipment and workers are on the job? Drivers certainly aren't doing that speed in my observations.

A Reduced speeds in construction zones are in effect whether or not there is work being done, according to the Minnesota State Patrol.

Sometimes lower speeds are necessary to safely maneuver through lane changes and other unexpected road conditions that occur on roadways under construction.

Goodbye to burned popcorn odor

Q How do I rid my microwave oven of burned popcorn odor?

A Clean the oven according to the manufacturer's instructions or wash all surfaces with detergent and water. Wipe dry.

Then wash the interior with a solution of 1 teaspoon baking soda per quart of warm water.

Chlorophyll cat litter can be used to absorb odors. Place a plate of it in the microwave for several hours with the door closed.

Activated charcoal (check aquarium stores or drugstores) also will soak up persistent odors. Spread 3 ounces of the fine powdered charcoal on a sheet of aluminum foil or shallow pan and place in the microwave and close the door. After six to eight hours, put the pan in a conventional oven and heat at 350 degrees for 20 minutes. (This will reactivate the charcoal so it can be re-used.) Place the charcoal back in the microwave and repeat this process until the odor disappears.

You can also try treating the inside with fragrance-free odor eliminator products available at home and discount stores. Be sure it contains no fragrance, or your microwave will smell like cheap perfume when you use it.
