YOUR GUIDE TO THE TWIN CITIES

DVD
"From Beyond" (MGM, $20)
Stuart Gordon's 1986 horror film about a machine that opens the mind to new worlds is lurid, kinky and unsettling. It perfectly realizes the off-kilter vision of author H.P. Lovecraft, just like the director's 1985 adaptation of "Re-Animator." For this DVD, out today, Gordon has restored unrated scenes, but he laments in commentary that some especially shocking footage has been lost. The film's femme fatale, Barbara Crampton, and bizarre frontman, Jeffrey Combs, join in on the fun talk track. Ample extras include an interview with Gordon and details on the restoration.
GAME
"Jeanne D'Arc" (Sony, $30 for PSP)
OK, so maybe English forces didn't actually use demons in their quest to dominate 15th-century France. Still, this turn-based strategy game about the legendary Joan of Arc is one of the best titles released to date for Sony's handheld video-game system. Using the intuitive controls, players command the French heroine and a team of fighters as they wield weapons, items and spells to defeat invaders in dozens of beautifully rendered environments. Captivating anime scenes create a cohesive story and make the game compelling from start to dazzling finish.
GADGET
AirTamer A300 ($60; www.filterstream.com)
I get the idea behind this travel-sized air purifier, which uses ionic technology to clear pollutants from the air you breathe. I just didn't notice any difference while wearing the cell-phone-sized device around my neck. Your experience might differ. Just be prepared for smart-aleck inquiries from curious onlookers. At least it's silent.
