Burns scores twice, delivers Sharks a victory over Avalanche
DENVER – Brent Burns' second goal of the game broke a tie with 1 minute, 39 seconds left, helping the San Jose Sharks beat the Colorado Avalanche 4-3 on Sunday.
Burns made it 3-2 when he came down the right boards and sent a snap shot through traffic and past goalie Semyon Varlamov. The goal was upheld under review. Burns also had a short-handed goal in the second period.
•TOP OF THEIR CLASS: The Montreal Canadiens improved to 5-0-0 at home and raised their league-best point total to 22 with a 5-1 victory over the Winnipeg Jets. Tomas Fleischmann had two goals and an assist. Chris Thorburn scored for Winnipeg, spoiling Mike Condon's shutout with 6:03 left.
•SABRES KEEP ISLANDERS REELING: Sam Reinhart broke a tie with 6:16 remaining, helping the Buffalo Sabres complete a come-from-behind 2-1 win over the New York Islanders at the Barclays Center. New York has lost three straight. Matt Moulson also scored in the third period for the Sabres.
•LIGHTNING WINS: Ryan Callahan and Steven Stamkos scored in the second period to give Tampa Bay the lead, and the Lightning beat the Hurricanes 4-3 in Raleigh, N.C.
•BUSY NIGHT IN GOAL: Frederick Andersen stopped 40 shots, and the visiting Anaheim Ducks ended a five-game winless streak with a 4-2 victory over the Predators, who lost consecutive games for the first time this season.
