Go to School and Work Full-Time

Laura Price, Associate Director of the John M. Morrison Center for Entrepreneurship at the University of St. Thomas, has not only gone back to school while working full-time, but also works with professionals doing just the same on a daily basis.

"Make sure you choose not only the right program, but also the right format," said Price. "Many colleges and universities offer the same program, only in a different format."

At the University of St. Thomas, students can receive their MBA through a full-time program, a part-time evening program, or through an executive MBA program. Choosing the right program, Price says, is one of many steps to consider before developing your plan. Here are some other points to ponder, according to Price:

Weigh your level of commitment. If you can't commit to pursuing a degree full-time, consider taking certificate-based or professional development classes instead.
Discuss your plan with your family. Talk about how this will affect finances, extra-curricular activities, and the everyday routines the family is accustomed to.
Share your educational experiences with family members, colleagues, and friends.
Look for opportunities to integrate work projects with school projects and vice versa.

While school will take up a lot of time, don't lose focus on the duties of your full-time job.

"We all have extenuating circumstances that can affect our ability to do our work, but the difference with some employees is that they still continue to manage their jobs and careers without letting outside influences interfere," says Elizabeth Laukka, a Twin Cities human resources consultant and career advisor, who has worked with companies such as Fallon McElligott, American Express and Wells Fargo.

"Managing both requires planning and preparation," added Price. "Getting through is the hard part, but the rewards are lifelong."
