PATNA, India — Police arrested four teenagers on Monday after a video of them allegedly tearing the clothes off a girl in an east Indian village was shared widely on social media.
Four other young men are still being sought, said police official Nayyar Hasnain. Those arrested ranged in age from 14 to 18.
Police released no details on the victim, who appeared to be in her early teens or younger.
The video shows a crowd of men and boys swarming the girl along a dirt road, grabbing and groping her as she tries to fight them off and begs to be freed.
"Nahi bhaiya! Nahi bhaiya!" she screams. "No brother! No brother!"
More young men can be seen watching the daylight assault, including some filming it on their phones.
The attack occurred in the village of Bharthura, about 60 kilometers (30 miles) south of Patna, the capital of Bihar state. It was not immediately clear when it occurred.
Police also recovered a cell phone used to record the assault, Hasnain said.
India has been shaken by a series of sexual assaults since 2012, when a student was gang-raped and murdered on a moving New Delhi bus. That attack galvanized a country where widespread violence against women had long been quietly accepted. Hundreds of thousands of people took to the streets to demand better protection for women.
While the government has passed a series of laws since then increasing punishments for rape, it's rare for more than a few weeks to pass without yet another brutal sexual assault reaching India's front pages.
