Anibal Sanchez is officially a member of the Twins. The veteran righthander was officially signed, and Trevor May went on the 60-day disabled list.

Sanchez's one-year contract, as expected, is not guaranteed. He will receive $2.5 million if he makes the team.

May (above) was placed on the 60-day DL to make room for Sanchez on the 40-man roster.

Sanchez was 3-7 with a 6.41 ERA last season with Detroit, 20-30, 5.67 over his last three. The Twins believe they can help him get back on track with better pitch selection. Sanchez added that he's been banged up the last couple years but feels great for now and looks forward to a fresh start.

"I've got an opportunity, yes. I've got an opportunity here," he said. "I can see the opportunity here, too. They are a really really good group of players, offense, defense, pitchers. Everyone, they're really good. They have a lot of chance to pass another level, make the playoffs and try to win. That's the first thing in any team. Especially in this one, younger, stronger, faster. There's a lot of talent over here."

Now, a little opinion: I'm rating the Twins offseason as a C-plus.

Yes, the Twins have the making of a nice bullpen. The Addison Reed signing gives them a solid set-up man who can fill in as closer. Zach Duke gives them a crafty lefty. If Fernando Rodney, Captain Changeup, has one more good year in him, the bullpen set up nicely.

Taylor Rogers and Trevor Hildenberger showed their competitive chops last season. Now, they can't burned out 3-4 times a week.

As I've written before, the Twins had to add one starter. And they did in righthander Jake Odorizzi, who's a capable mid-rotation arm. Once Ervin Santana comes off the DL, the Twins rotation looks to be Santana, Jose Berrios, Odorizzi, Kyle Gibson - with everyone else battling for the fifth spot. And that's fine.

So why C-Plus?

The Twins' stated goal during the offseason was to sign a top tier pitcher. Thad Levine made it be known that they were after Yu Darvish. Paul Molitor repeated those sentiments during the winter meetings. They met him in the Dallas area, and they made a nine-figure offer.

But they didn't land him.

The window to win is opening for this team, and they know an elite starter is needed. The best way to add depth is to bring in a top shelf arm and push everyone down a notch. And the Twins failed to do so. Is it hard to land top tier pitching? No doubt. But the Twins have to end their habit of trying and start doing. Perhaps another opportunity will present itself at the trade deadline (Chris Archer?) and the Twins can make another push to bolster the rotation.

For now, the Twins are done chasing after starting pitching. Twins CBO Derek Falvey said he's not going to turn off his phone (in case something falls in his lap) but they are prepared to go with what they've got.

Now, back to regular programming.

Today will be a long day - on one of the warmest days so far. Morning physicals and drug testing pushed everything back one-half hour, and it could be 90 degrees by the time they are done today.

Odorizzi is scheduled to throw in the bullpen today, so the Twins can get a good look at their new starter. In fact, he's warming up right as I write this. And Sanchez is throwing on the mound next to him. Games start on Thursday!!!!

Brian Dozier remains away from camp as he passes a kidney stone. Ugh.
