The Star Tribune collects the names and stories of those who died after a confrontation with law enforcement in Minnesota dating back to January 2000.

This database was originally developed for the 2016 series "A Cry for Help," which documented the police-involved deaths of Minnesotans having mental health crises. It has since been repurposed as an ongoing resource to examine circumstances of deaths that government agencies don't adequately track.

Fatal police encounters are defined here as incidents in which an officer applies force resulting in someone's death. Fatalities during police chases, deaths within jails, or suicides in the presence of officers are excluded from this database. Some details are subject to change based on new information from additional reporting, law enforcement data or official death records.
