Stay or move?

Moving isn't cheap, and neither is a whole-house makeover. Here are some suggestions for those making that decision: Come up with two or three approaches for a whole-house transformation. Start with a bare-bones plan that includes just the essentials, but also create a shoot-for-the-moon list that includes every possible change you'd like to make. Does your house have a sense of style that you'd like to keep or that would be difficult to preserve? Or is it a blank slate that could be transformed into something you'd like better? Create a detailed budget for your preferred plan. Sure, this process can be costly, but it'll save you money in the long run. Once you have a design and a detailed budget, go house-shopping to find out if a move makes more sense than a transformation. Make sure that your neighborhood can support the value of the improved house. Sources: Mark Larson, Jean Rehkamp Larson and Rick Anderson Jim Buchta
