What: Cabin on Gull Lake in Washburn County, Wis.

Design team: Architect Marcelo Valdes, formerly of SALA Architects, Minneapolis, and intern Jessica Wodarz. Valdes recently started his own firm, M. Valdes Architects, St. Paul; www.mvaldesarc.com.

Valdes will be teaching a Compleat Scholar class on "More Home, Less House: Back to Basics Green Design" in November at the University of Minnesota. Register at www.cce.umn.edu/scholars

Contractors: Nick Allen, Hand Made Homes, and David Tworek, Tworek Construction, Spooner, Wis.

Size: 1,700 square feet with three bedrooms and three bathrooms.

Cost: About $220 per square foot.
