In 1997, the Center for Universal Design at North Carolina State University compiled a wide-ranging list of characteristic features of universal houses, such as wider doors, stepless entrances, lever-door handles, no-curb walk-in showers and higher electrical outlets. The guidelines, which have no mandated rules, evolved over the past several decades from government requirements for accessible housing for people with disabilities.
