PROVIDENCE, R.I. — A historic cottage that was owned by a descendant of the founder of Rhode Island has reopened to the public.
WJAR-TV reports the first floor of the Betsey Williams Cottage in Roger Williams Park in Providence opened for tours Thursday for the first time in 30 years.
The home dates to the late 1700s and was restored with a $240,000 grant.
Roger Williams' descendant Trish Woodard says fellow descendant Betsey Williams was the last person to own the cottage before she gave it to the city in her will. The cottage now displays life on the Williams farm in the 18th and 19th centuries.
Roger Williams settled Providence in 1636 and championed religious freedom and democracy.
