Why do we require your birth date to register?

We require our members to provide their birth date for two reasons:

Startribune.com does not collect or store personal information from anyone under the age of 13 without express parental consent as required by FTC guidelines and the1998 Children's Online Privacy Protection Act . Our registration system checks the age of new members and does not accept it from users under 13.
Some startribune.com features require that users meet a minimum age. For example, to enter many startribune.com contests, we require that users be age 18 or older.
