Despite all the attention surrounding DFL endorsements in city races, DFLers aren't the only candidates vying for spots at City Hall this fall.

The City Council's official minority party, the Green Party, has endorsed five candidates for City Council seats. That includes current Council Member Cam Gordon, who represents the University of Minnesota and parts of Cedar-Riverside.

The four non-incumbent candidates are running in districts with competitive races or open seats.

Chris Lautenschlager is running against DFL incumbent Sandy Colvin Roy for the Ward 12 seat in southeast Minneapolis. Colvin Roy failed to pick up the DFL endorsement this spring after an aggresive challenge by DFLer Andrew Johnson, who is still running. Lautenschlager is communications director at Altered Esthetics, an arts organization.

Kristina Gronquist is pursuing the Ward 3 seat currently held by Diane Hofstede, a district that straddles the central riverfront. Hofstede is already locked in a tight race against DFLer Jacob Frey, who won the party's endorsement and has support from several incumbent council members. Gronquist is the assistant general manager at the Eastside Food Cooperative.

Kale Severson is one of several candidates gunning for the open Ward 5 seat being vacated by mayoral candidate Don Samuels. Ward 5 covers the sourthern half of north Minneapolis. DFLers did not endorse any of the four candidates vying for their party's nod. Severson is a basketball coach and president of the North High School Alumni Association.

Ty Moore is running for the open seat in the South Minneapolis seat being vacated by Gary Schiff, who is also running for mayor. Moore is a community organizer for Socialist Alternative. He unsuccessfully sought the DFL endorsement, which went to Alondra Cano is running with the DFL endorsement.

The party also endorsed Annie Young, who already holds an at-large seat on the Park Board.

Separately, Green Party member Doug Mann is running for mayor but did not get involved in time to be considered at teh party's May 18 convention, said Fifth District Green Party steering committee member Holle Brian.
