Gophers’ Big Ten season gets going

Preview: The Gophers (11-2) enter Big Ten Conference play with their best record since the 2014-15 season. The Gophers are coming off a 101-75 victory over UC Riverside on Dec. 22. The Gophers trailed by as many as 15 points in the second quarter before taking control with a 32-5 run. The Gophers are 30-for-69 from three-point range in their past two games. Northwestern (7-7) is coming off a 74-40 victory over Eastern Illinois on Dec. 22. The victory was just the second in the past eight games for the Wildcats.

Players to watch: Gophers G Carlie Wagner, who is averaging 18.8 points per game and shooting a career-high 44 percent from the field, needs 16 points to surpass Linda Roberts for fifth place on the Gophers’ career scoring list. G Kenisha Bell scored 30 in the victory over UC Riverside — the fourth consecutive game she has scored at least 20 points. Wildcats freshman G Lindsey Pulliam is averaging 14.7 points per game and is sixth in the Big Ten in free throw percentage (83.9). Sophomore F/C Abi Scheid, from Elk River, is averaging 13.1 points and 5.3 rebounds per game. Junior F Pallas Kunaiyi-Akpanah is averaging 9.9 points and 10.2 rebounds per game.

Numbers: The Gophers are third in the Big Ten and ninth in the nation in scoring at 87.6 points per game. The Gophers are averaging a Big Ten-best 45.8 rebounds per game.
