The city of Annapolis will hold a benefit concert featuring Maryland-based rockers Good Charlotte to honor the five Capital Gazette employees killed in an attack in their newsroom.

Mayor Gavin Buckley said the event, “Annapolis Rising: A Benefit for The Capital Gazette and Free Press,” will take place July 28 and will include performances, as well as guest speakers from the journalism community. Proceeds will benefit a fund established for the victims and survivors, as well as journalism scholarships.

Police say Jarrod Ramos, who had a grudge against the newspaper, blasted his way into the newsroom on June 28, killing John McNamara, Wendi Winters, Rob Hiaasen, Rebecca Smith and Gerald Fischman. Ramos remains jailed on five counts of first-degree murder.

Good Charlotte, which includes twins Joel and Benji Madden, said they are proud to return to their roots to pay tribute to the community. “This is the place we go back to. We feel very, very deeply connected to Annapolis,” Joel Madden said.

“If we can help support an event that will be uplifting for the families of the victims ... it feels really important to be a part of that,” Benji Madden said.

Meet the Jazz Master

Grammys are one thing. But being named an NEA Jazz Master is an even bigger honor, arguably the most prestigious in the jazz world. Maria Schneider, the Windom, Minn.-bred composer, arranger and orchestra leader who collaborated on David Bowie’s final album, was recognized Wednesday by the National Endowment for the Arts along with pianist Abdullah Ibrahim, composer/singer/pianist Bob Dorough and jazz historian/critic Stanley Crouch. The once-in-a-lifetime fellowship includes as much as $25,000. “I’ve seen so many of my heroes receive this honor in the past. It inspires me to do more — much, much more,” the five-time Grammy winner said. “There’s a heck of a lot to live up to in this club.” The new masters will be honored in April at Kennedy Center.
