Two candidates, to be judged strictly on the sweetness of their qualifications -- but watch out for brain freeze -- await those attending the Minnesota State Fair, which opens Thursday.
Fairgoers can vote on the next favorite hometown flavor of Kemps ice cream. The choices have been narrowed from hundreds of entries to two finalists: Land of 10,000 Licks and Pubcorn and Peanuts.
Jennifer Folkens of Rogers came up with the Land of 10,000 Licks flavor, which includes thick swirls of caramel with bits of toffee and sea salt sprinkled throughout. The second flavor, Pubcorn and Peanuts, was submitted by Kelly Moritz of St. Paul and contains popcorn-flavored ice cream, crushed salted peanuts and ribbons of dark chocolate.
Fairgoers can stop by the Kemps booth on Machinery Hill at 1 p.m. daily, sample the two final flavors and cast their vote. Daily voting ends at 2 p.m.
At 1 p.m. on Sept. 1, the winner will be chosen through a combination of fairgoer votes, online voting at www.kempsnextflavor.com and a celebrity judging panel comprising Kemps spokeswoman (and Joe Mauer's mom) Teresa Mauer, Martha "Sweet Martha" Rossini Olson and the soon-to-be crowned Princess Kay of the Milky Way.
The newest addition to the hometown favorite line of ice cream will join previous favorites: Sweet Martha's Cookies, Pearson's Nut Goodie and the Minnesota Wild. The winner will receive $2,500 and a year's supply of their ice cream. Their flavor will appear on store shelves in 2012.
