A recent Court of Appeals ruling over a Wright County farmer’s six-figure jury award after his cows were affected by stray currents from a local electric company is the most recent development in three decades of legal battles between upper Midwestern farmers and electric companies over the “stray voltage” phenomenon, which has resulted in laws protecting electric companies, while some law practices are dedicated solely to litigation over the issue. The electric companies say it’s a scapegoat for dairy farmers in a rough economy. Farmers say it’s real, and has cost them millions in revenues.
