Schaffhausen trial

  • Updated: April 2, 2013 - 6:00 PM

Aaron Schaffhausen, 35, pleaded guilty last week to killing his three daughters in their River Falls home. But he maintains that he had a mental disease or defect and shouldn’t be held responsible for the deaths of 11-year old Amara, 8-year-old Sophie and 5-year-old Cecilia. His plea puts the burden of proof on defense attorneys to convince 10 of 12 jurors that, because of a mental disease or defect, Schaffhausen lacked substantial capacity either to appreciate the wrongfulness of his conduct or to conform his conduct to the requirements of law. A jury of nine women and six men were picked Monday to hear the case.
