White Bear Lake is plummeting back to the record low level it reached in 2010. It was only about 3 incehs away Saturday and no rain is in the forecast all week. Recent studies have pointed the finger at groundwater pumping -- for drinking, showers and lawn watering in the growing communities in the area. The lake has a small watershed and is dependent on groundwater to get filled, rather than rain and runoff. Communities are jacking up water billings and looking for other water sources but as the Met Council has described, the 11-county areas lakes, wetlands and streams face a "nearly insurmountable challenge" from groundwater withdrawals. Water getting precious in the land of 10,000 lakes?
