TV critic's choice: This week

We can buy the concept of Treat Williams playing a tycoon who accidentally puts the planet in peril in "The Storm" (8 p.m., KARE, Ch. 11). We can even accept former "West Wing" actress Teri Polo as an intrepid reporter. But James Van Der Beek, the dude from "Dawson's Creek," as a scientist? We're doomed.

The cast of "Today" (7 a.m., KARE, Ch. 11) can't get a break -- even on vacation. Cameras will capture Meredith Vieira and Ann Curry roughing it from Sagamore Resort in New York, while Matt Lauer and Al Roker get the much cushier assignment of catching rays in Key West, Fla. Starting Wednesday, you can catch Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb as they visit San Antonio; Thursday finds Natalie Morales and Amy Robach in Las Vegas.

TV's new motto: Overweight people welcome! On the heels of "The Biggest Loser" comes the new reality series "More to Love" (8 p.m., KMSP, Ch. 9), which suggests you don't have to be Twiggy-thin to find romance. Luke Conley, an overweight real-estate developer who might be too smooth for his own good, romances 20 chunky women, several of whom have never been on a date. That doesn't stop them from flirting up a storm. The theme may be well-meaning, but this is still a tawdry reality series that's more interested in watching women weep than having them find true happiness.

Angelina Jolie's reputation as a fascinating celebrity didn't start with "Girl, Interrupted" or even Billy Bob Thornton. The credit goes to the 1998 made-for-TV film "Gia" (7 & 9:30 p.m., Oxygen), in which the soon-to-be-superstar played self-destructive model Gia Carangi, who ended up dying of complications from AIDS at 26. The movie earned Golden Globes for Jolie and co-star Faye Dunaway.

Those of you who still want to keep talking about Michael Jackson can do something more than check the CNN ticker for autopsy updates. "Michael Jackson: 30th Anniversary Celebration: The Solo Years" (8 p.m., TV ONE) gets a repeat performance with a great mix of singers, including Liza Minnelli, James Ingram and Whitney Houston. And if that's not enough, Destiny's Child delivers a sizzling version of "Bootylicious." What does that have to do with Michael? Who cares??
