If it walks like a duck and talks like a duck, it's probably an ... award winner. KARE-TV, Channel 11, won a national Edward R. Murrow award Monday for a feature piece about Frank, a drake mallard who rides shotgun with a local truck driver.
The feature piece, reported by Boyd Huppert and shot by Jonathan Malat, was the only local entry to win a 2009 Murrow, presented annually by the Radio-Television News Directors Association. It is the local NBC affiliate's 14th victory and the fifth that Huppert has worked on. "I've certainly done weightier pieces that I'm a little more proud of, but this was a fun little ride," Huppert said. "I think the judges were probably looking for stuff to lift the spirit."
"NBC News" was the biggest winner, taking home five of the 79 awards, including one for overall excellence. The awards will be presented Oct. 12 in New York City. NEAL JUSTIN
