Building an empire

It's still early in the year, but it's hard to imagine there will be a bigger success story on network TV in 2015 than "Empire," which wraps up its short season with a two-hour episode. Not only is it the most popular new show of the season, but its viewership has grown every week. More important, it's proof that shows starring people of color can soar. 7 p.m. KMSP, Ch. 9

The hills are alive

First there was the hit live version on NBC. Then there was Lady Gaga sharing the stage with Julie Andrews at the Oscars. And now it's time for "The Untold Story of 'The Sound of Music,' " a Diane Sawyer special. It's just a matter of time before we get "The Von Trapp Variety Hour." 9 p.m. KSTP, Ch. 5
