Strong pairing

Minnesota-raised author Mark Frost got lucky. “The Greatest Game Ever Played,” based on Frost’s book, cast Shia LaBeouf before he went plumb crazy and still was considered one of the most promising actors of his generation. He plays Francis Ouimet, who challenges some of the best players in the world during the 1913 U.S. Open. The movie’s fine; Frost’s book is better. 7 p.m. Golf

True detective

Expectations for “Veronica Mars: The Movie,” which played in limited theaters this year, were way too high. On the small screen, the project plays out like an average episode of the TV series — and that’s sort of a compliment. There’s not much of a plot, but Kristen Bell gets off some choice zingers. 8:05 p.m. HBO

The fault in our soup

Red-hot actress Shailene Woodley (“The Fault in Our Stars”) takes a break from her in-demand schedule to get a bite to eat. She guest-stars on a new episode of “Top Chef Duels” that pits Los Angeles cooks Stefan Richter and C.J. Jacobson against each other. 9 p.m. Bravo
