Cicely Tyson stars in “The Trip to Bountiful.”

Road trip

Those of us not lucky enough to see Cicely Tyson’s recent Tony-award winning turn on Broadway get at least a taste of her greatness in the TV version of “The Trip to Bountiful.” The intimacy of the stage production is missing, but Tyson has been around long enough to know how to play to the camera. 7 p.m. Saturday, Lifetime

To infinity and beyond

The two faces of Seth MacFarlane are on display with a new episode of “Family Guy” (7:30 p.m. Sunday, KMSP, Ch. 9) with guest voice Lauren Bacall, followed by the first installment of “Cosmos” (8 p.m. Sunday, KSMP, Ch. 9 and various cable stations), a reboot of the legendary science series with foul-mouthed cartoon boy serving as executive producer. For more on MacFarlane’s involvement, see Saturday’s Variety section.

Something’s not alright

The celebration of Matthew McConaughey continues with the season finale of “True Detective,” a gripping series that just may put its lead actor back on the awards circuit. I’m not sure how it’s all going to end, but based on the increasingly bleak nature of each episode, it’s probably not going to be pretty. 8 p.m. Sunday, HBO

They see dead people

ABC may finally have its “Lost” sequel. “Resurrection” takes place in a fictional Missouri town that’s an island unto itself, but instead of hatches and smog monsters, they’re faced with the return of former residents who died years earlier. The premise tests the religious faith of the characters and the viewers, something network television rarely tries. To learn more about cast member Devin Kelley, a Minnesota native, see Sunday’s Variety section. 8 p.m. Sunday, KSTP, Ch. 5.
