“The Gabby Douglas Story”

By the book

Too cold to attend book club? Chill out instead with “DH Lawrence: A Journey Without Shame,” an in-depth look at how at how an Alpine adventure inspired the legendary author to write “Sons and Lovers,” not to mention lay the groundwork for the epic musical number “Who Let the Dogs Out?” 7:10 a.m. Friday, 9:10 a.m. Saturday, BBC World News

To Russia with love

He didn’t tear down the Berlin Wall, but the Piano Man did help soothe tension between the USSR and the United States in his own manner by taking his band to Russia in 1987. His struggles and songs are documented in “Billy Joel: A Matter of Trust — The Road to Russia.” 8 p.m. Friday, Showtime.

For more on his appearance, see Sunday’s Variety section. Approximately 9:30 p.m. Sunday, KMSP, Ch. 9 Neal Justin
