Phil (Ty Burrell) “helps out” on the first day of school, on the one-hour season premiere of “Modern Family.”

Play ball

If you have a soft spot for “The Bad News Bears,” you may want to root for “Back in the Game” (7:30 p.m., KSTP, Ch. 5), a so-so sitcom about a recently divorced woman (Maggie Lawson) who coaches a bunch of losers when she moves back with her grumpy father (played to the hilt by James Caan).

Globetrotting

Celebrities must make great tour guides, which is the premise of the new series “The Getaway” (8 p.m., Esquire), featuring sightseeing trips with Joel McHale, Aisha Tyler and others. The show airs on the new Esquire Network, which has taken the place of the Style Network.

How I spent my summer vacation

“Modern Family” (8 p.m., KSTP, Ch. 5), which remains network TV’s finest sitcom, returns with a full hour that catches us up on how everyone spent their summer and follows Luke and Manny as they start high school.
