"Football Night in America," "The Big Sleep"

First-string team

The Dallas Cowboys take on the New York Giants for the official kickoff of the NFL season, but for most couch-potato fans, the festivities really begin an hour earlier as Bob Costas, Tony Dungy and Dan Patrick host "Football Night in America" (6:30 p.m., KARE, Ch. 11).

She had it all

It's Lauren Bacall Month at TCM, which means the network turns over the airwaves to the husky-voiced actress every Wednesday. The tribute starts with some true classics: 1944's "To Have and Have Not" (7 p.m.) and 1946's "The Big Sleep" (9 p.m.). By the end of the month, we should all know how to whistle.

Investigator Grant Wilson may be gone, but the spirits remain. A new batch of "Ghost Hunters" (8 p.m., Syfy) focuses on Southern-based adventures, which means the team heads to Charleston to conjure up the country's first serial killer and, later, visits Georgia's Camp Rutledge, home of the original "Friday the 13th" movie shoot.
