WCCO-TV's next news director will be back on familiar ground. The local CBS affiliate announced Wednesday that it has hired Scott Libin to fill the post. Libin served as news director at KSTP-TV from 1998 to 2003 and has been teaching at the Poynter Institute, a journalism think tank in St. Petersburg, Fla., for the past four years.

Libin will replace Jeff Kiernan, who left in September for a CBS station in Boston.

"This was a no-brainer," said Libin, who will start his new job on Dec. 3.

Susan Adams Loyd, WCCO's general manager, said she had interviewed about two dozen candidates before selecting Libin for his journalistic integrity, his ties to the Twin Cities and his gifts as a teacher.

"He's just a class act," she said.
