KARE-11 news team wins national Emmy

The major players at CBS and ABC have more than Brian Williams to worry about. They've got to look out for the gang at KARE, Channel 11, as well. The local NBC affiliate picked up a national Emmy on Monday night in New York in the category of outstanding feature story, beating network-produced stories from "CBS Sunday Morning" and "ABC World News Tonight."

Reporter Boyd Huppert, photojournalist John Drilling and news director Tom Lindner were honored for a piece on Kaziah Hancock, a Utah artist who paints portraits of soldiers killed in the Iraq War. KARE qualified for the category because the segment ran in its entirety on "Today," thanks to support from anchor Matt Lauer.

Lindner, who was not in attendance, said the victory shocked the audience.

"Our guys were seated in the back of the room, so it took them some time to get up front," he said. "I think people thought they were waiters."
