Future Interstates

Tuesday: One of the ingredients that adds to the Twin Cities' robust network of independent choreographers is the opportunity for artists to present new work. The latest of these is Future Interstates, a monthly series that began this year at the Cowles Center. Curated by Body Cartography Project and HIJACK, two exceptional dance companies that forge new forms, the series offers a chance for dancemakers to experiment with performance and improvisation. This week's showcase features Kendra Dennard, a member of TU Dance; Jeffrey Wells of SuperGroup; Sydney Burch; students from St. Paul Conservatory of the Performing Arts, and the collaborative team of Dustin Haug and Neal Jahren. (8 p.m. Tue.; 528 Hennepin Av. S., Mpls.; $5 suggested donation, 612-206-3636, www.thecowlescenter.org.)

Stuart Pimsler

Wednesday: The choreographer has long held admiration for novelist Philip Roth, so his newest work, "At It Again: The Need to Perform Philip Roth," features Pimsler composing a fan letter to the writer. The solo performance reveals Pimsler's connections to Roth's writings as he mines his attraction to the work. An informal performance at Common Good Books will be followed by a discussion with Pimsler and director Suzanne Costello about how the literary arts have influenced their practice. Get there early for this free event. (7 p.m. Wed.; 38 S. Snelling Av., St. Paul; free, 651-225-8989, www.commongoodbooks.com.

'Sistah Solo'

Thursday-Saturday: Back in 2011, choreographer and curator Maia Maiden started "Sistah Solo" at Patrick's Cabaret after frustration with how few opportunities existed here for women of color to show their work. The event featured film, dance, music and spoken word pieces from a diverse group of female artists. After remounting the show two years ago, Maiden brings back "Sistah Solo," this time at Intermedia Arts. She's added a companion second half, called "Being Brothas," where men of color get their own chance. (7:30 p.m. Thu.-Sat.; Intermedia Arts, 2822 Lyndale Av. S. Mpls.; $10-$25, 612-871-4444, intermediaarts.org.)
