The Illuminations

This weekend: We're about halfway through the first year of the Southern Theater's ArtShare program, a new model of programming that features resident companies performing in repertory. That has meant extended runs of shows but this weekend there are just four performances of "The Illuminations," a world premiere work presented by Black Label Movement. New York-based director/choreographer Scott Rink incorporates dance, theater and music in a 60-minute piece adapted from the works of French poets Paul Verlaine and Arthur Rimbaud. Set in 1871, it focuses on the forbidden love between the two poets as well as their love triangle with Mathilde Mauté de Fleurville, Verlaine's wife. The show is set to the music of Claude Debussy and Benjamin Britten, performed live by soprano Patricia Kent and pianist Joe Strachan. For mature audiences only. (7:30 p.m. Thu.-Sat., 2 p.m. Sun.; Southern Theater, 1420 Washington Av. S., Mpls.; $15-$25, 612-340-0155 or www.southerntheater.org.)Sheila Regan

Zenon Dance

Opening: Live Bulgarian folk singers will join Zenon on a new work by Wynn Fricke called "The Mourning Tree" during the company's 32nd spring concert. It is the ninth dance Fricke has choreographed for the company, where she formerly was a company member. She frequently uses live music in her work, this time enlisting the Mila Vocal Ensemble, an a cappella women's choir based in St. Paul. More live music infuses the program with the return of New York choreographer luciana achugar's 2013 "Molten Substance," with live percussive score by composer J.T. Bates. The evening will also include Osnel Delgado's 2014 "Coming Home" and a premiere work by Christopher Schlichting called "Inside Wrinkles." (8 p.m. Fri.-Sat., Ends May 17; the Cowles Center, 528 Hennepin Av. S., Mpls.; $34, 612-206-3636).S.R.
