BLACK NATIVITY

Opening Thursday: This year’s concert version of Penumbra Theatre’s long-running holiday staple will have more meaning than most. The gospel and hymn-infused celebration of the birth of Christ doubles as a survival celebration. At this time last year, Penumbra was in the throes of a high-stakes campaign to erase a deficit that threatened to doom the playhouse. Greta Oglesby, Dennis Spears and Yolande Bruce headline this year’s show. Musical arranger Sanford Moore will lead the choir of Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church. Theater founder Lou Bellamy narrates a show that usually rouses the spirit. (7:30 p.m. Thu., Fri. & Sun., 2 & 7:30 p.m. Sat., ends Dec. 22, Penumbra Theatre, 270 N. Kent St., St. Paul, $30-$66, 651-224-3180 or www.penumbratheatre.org.) ROHAN PRESTON
