‘Fruit Fly: The Musical’

For nearly 20 years, gay actor/writer Max Wojtanowicz (pictured, with Cat Brindisi) has had an emotionally intimate friendship with Sheena Janson, who is straight. They made light of the relationship in “Fruit Fly: The Musical,” a modest hit in the Minnesota Fringe Festival a couple of years ago. Composed by Michael Gruber, it is being retooled and expanded in Illusion Theater’s Fresh Ink series under directors Peter Rothstein and Nikki Swoboda. Brindisi plays Sheena in the workshop. Although his friendship with Janson “is wildly inappropriate, we can’t quit each other,” said Wojtanowicz. (8 p.m. Thu.-Sat., 7 p.m. next Sun., Illusion Theater, 528 Hennepin Av. S., Mpls., $12-$17, 612-339-4944 or www.illusiontheater.org.)
