'REMBRANDT IN AMERICA'

Final two weeks: Definitely in the running for top honors as Premier Art Show of 2012, this Minneapolis Institute of Arts exhibit will close Sept. 16. The good news is that it will have extended evening hours -- until 8 p.m. -- starting Tuesday. Besides about 30 paintings by the Dutch master, the show includes 20 that were once assumed to be his work but that scholars now believe were by his students or followers. All of the pictures are on loan from U.S. museums and private collectors. Portraits predominate, including several studies the artist made of himself at various ages, from confident youth to grizzled elder. "Minerva in Her Study" is an allegorical portrait of his wife, richly costumed as the ancient goddess of wisdom complete with a crown of laurel leaves. On loan from a private New York collection, "Minerva" has rarely been seen in public. (10 a.m.-8 p.m. Tue.-Wed. and Fri.-Sun.; 10 a.m.-9 p.m. Thu. $12-$14. Ends Sept. 16. 2400 3rd Av. S. 612-870-3131 or www.artsmia.org.)
