WHO ELSE GETS LEGACY TOURING DOLLARS?

"The Cherry Orchard" is one of 42 projects this year that will receive a total of nearly $1.9 million from the Minnesota State Arts Board's arts touring program.

Now in its third year, the initiative funds up to 80 percent of a project's cost -- to a maximum of $100,000. Proposals vary greatly in intent and scope.

Illusion Theater of Minneapolis received $99,650 to tour its production of "Bill W. and Dr. Bob," about the founders of Alcoholics Anonymous.

James Sewell Ballet gets $60,600 for performances and residencies in Grand Rapids, Red Wing and Detroit Lakes, Minn.

The Rose Ensemble, Cantus and Monroe Crossing are examples of Twin Cities musical groups that take their concerts statewide.

• The Duluth Superior Symphony Orchestra will visit cities on the North Shore and the Iron Range.

Grant applications are reviewed on several criteria, including a demonstration of support from the tour communities.

"It's an opportunity that these communities wouldn't have otherwise," said Sue Gens, executive director of the arts board.
