WHO ELSE GETS LEGACY TOURING DOLLARS?
"The Cherry Orchard" is one of 42 projects this year that will receive a total of nearly $1.9 million from the Minnesota State Arts Board's arts touring program.
Now in its third year, the initiative funds up to 80 percent of a project's cost -- to a maximum of $100,000. Proposals vary greatly in intent and scope.
• Illusion Theater of Minneapolis received $99,650 to tour its production of "Bill W. and Dr. Bob," about the founders of Alcoholics Anonymous.
• James Sewell Ballet gets $60,600 for performances and residencies in Grand Rapids, Red Wing and Detroit Lakes, Minn.
• The Rose Ensemble, Cantus and Monroe Crossing are examples of Twin Cities musical groups that take their concerts statewide.
• The Duluth Superior Symphony Orchestra will visit cities on the North Shore and the Iron Range.
Grant applications are reviewed on several criteria, including a demonstration of support from the tour communities.
"It's an opportunity that these communities wouldn't have otherwise," said Sue Gens, executive director of the arts board.
