Ends Sunday 1/1
Can you pick out the melody for "Summertime" in a Yiddish theater ditty? How about "It Ain't Necessarily So" in a Hebrew sabbath chant? Joseph Vass teased out the Jewish influences in George Gershwin's music, and the results are most satisfying in this show. Prudence Johnson, left, T. Mychael Rambo and Maggie Burton sing through more than a dozen of Gershwin's great songs; Michael Paul Levin portrays the composer as narrator. Vass leads his Klezmerica band to accompany the singers and occasionally step up front for an instrumental. This show is a great treat for current and future fans of Gershwin's lovely music.
