"The Nutcracker" has never been safe around Ballet of the Dolls.

"The Nutcracker" has never been safe around Ballet of the Dolls. Artistic director Myron Johnson is well known for upending tradition by giving key roles to Barbie and Ken, so it was only a matter of time before a burlesque cabaret found its way into the mix. In "Nutcracker: The Lost Act" the Dolls team up with Amy Buchanan and Le Cirque Rouge to add a little spice to the Land of Sweets. In this version Marie -- who usually passes the time with a Nutcracker Prince come to life, fighting off rats, dancing among the flowers and idolizing the Sugarplum Fairy -- runs away from home, gets hit by a car and finds herself in a fantasy world quite unlike any other. Kitschy, naughty, a bit dark and yet still full of good old-fashioned cheer? Sounds like another holiday classic from the Dolls.
