Musical 'Spring Awakening' is among shows coming to Minneapolis

Other touring productions booked at Hennepin stages include "Grease," "Phantom," "Wicked," "A Chorus Line" and "Frost/Nixon."

"Spring Awakening," the hit musical that mashes together a story of angst-ridden, sex-obsesssed 19th-century German youths with stylized choreography by Bill T. Jones and a karaoke-style rock score, is coming to Minneapolis as part of the 2008-09 touring Broadway season presented by Hennepin Theatre Trust.

The musical, which won eight Tony Awards last year, including best musical, has been running in New York since 2006. It will open at the Orpheum Theatre Jan. 27.

The season includes the return of "Wicked" (Nov. 5-Dec. 7); a revival of "Grease" (Dec. 30, 2008-Jan. 4, 2009), whose Broadway production starred Twin Citian Laura Osnes; and Peter Morgan's post-Watergate "Frost/Nixon," in which Stacy Keach plays disgraced President Richard Nixon (Jan. 6-11, 2009).

Also coming are: "Fiddler on the Roof," starring Chaim Topol, best known for playing milkman Tevye in the 1971 film version of "Fiddler" (Feb. 24-March 1); a revival of the landmark musical "A Chorus Line," which first bowed in New York in 1975 and ran for more than 6,000 performances (June 16-21, 2009); the return of Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Phantom of the Opera" (May 13-June 7, 2009); and "A Bronx Tale," Chazz Palminteri's mob-themed one-person show that Robert DeNiro turned into a movie (June 2-7, 2009).

"We want to please and expand our audiences and this eclectic line-up does that, with both favorites and ground-breaking new productions," said Tom Hoch, president of Hennepin Theatre Trust.
