In Twin Cities arts, one arrival and one departure.
The Schubert Club, Minnesota's oldest arts organization, has chosen a new executive director. Kathleen van Bergen, who held top artistic administrative positions with the Philadelphia Orchestra and the St. Louis Symphony, will take the position this spring from interim director Sharon Carlson. Longtime director Bruce Carlson (no relation) died in 2006. Established in 1882 and based in St. Paul, the Schubert Club presents eight concert series each year, operates a museum of musical instruments and offers scholarships and commissions.
Meanwhile, Thomas Proehl will leave his position as executive director of the Minnesota State Arts Board for a leadership post at American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco. Proehl was managing director of the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis until August, 2006, and became interim director at the Arts Board that December. The assignment was made permanent last year. Proehl had theatrical administrative experience with the Signature Theatre Company and the Dramatists Guild before coming to the Guthrie. He's a native of Moorhead, Minn.
