Crowding my shelf are CDs conducted by Michael Gielen, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Jascha Horenstein, Otto Klemperer, Clemens Krauss, Rafael Kubelik, Dimitri Mitropoulos, Carl Schuricht, Arturo Toscanini and Bruno Walter. I'd be loath to part with any of them, but my current favorites are led by Kubelik (a 1977 Munich performance, released on the Orfeo label) and Gielen (a 1987 recording, reissued by several companies, with the Prague Philharmonic Choir and the SWR Orchestra of Baden-Baden, Germany). Gielen's account, unlike Kubelik's, is accommodated on a single CD; I've seen it for as little as $4 on Amazon.com. (L.F.)
All proceeds benefit music and art programs for kids in Minnesota public schools. In Stores December 8th!
